Over the last 3,000 years Lisbon has been inhabited and/or ruled by Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, the Arabic Moors, the Christian Crusaders, Spanish and French.

The Famous Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama discovered the sea route from Lisbon to India at the end of the 15th century. The city's wealth increased as they traded with Africa, Europe, the Far East and even Brazil once gold was found there in the 1800s. As such the city developed into one of the most cosmopolitan spots on the planet.
