Not every minute of the day can or will be pre-planned,  as no one wants to have a regimented. But, the more time spent finding out what there is to see and do in a place before you go = less time wasted over there, especially in Europe where pre-booking at popular sites can save a ton of time, not everything is open 7 days a week and closing for a midday siesta is common.
